The Old Cemetery is a particular joy in spring, with flowers bursting out between the graves and the paths firm and dry. No matter which path I take, there are things to see, both new and old. The names on some graves feel like old friends because I see them so often. Others, I notice for the first time, and their stories intrigue me. Many are personal, but others are entwined with the story of Southampton. The Moon family grave is one of these.

For a while now I’ve been meaning to take a wander to South Stoneham Cemetery to look for R J Mitchell’s grave and today seemed like a good day for it. The weather forecast was for rain and the brooding sky backed it up so it seemed best to stick fairly close to home. It also seemed a good idea to bring the iPhone out of retirement. With one last look back at the stricken car transporter I pushed on along the shingle spit towards Calshot Castle. The rain had stopped which was a bonus but, the further along the spit I went, the stronger it became. It was a real struggle to make headway against it. Coupled with the shingle I was walking on I figured I was getting my daily dose of exercise even if the actual miles wouldn’t add up to much.
