Some times things don’t go to plan. We all have the odd minor disaster from time to time and once in a while, if we’re unlucky, a major one. Often a disaster can turn out to be a blessing in disguise, even if it takes a while for that to become clear. In early January 2013, I had a day that seemed to be all about disaster of one kind or another. Continue reading Disasters and Mr Bumble – first published 10 January 2013

a longer walk than planned – first published 4 January 2013

Some days I just don’t feel like going out but, at the beginning of January 2013, my Moonwalk training diary told me I needed to walk ten miles. The walk I’d planned started on a familiar route and then led me into the unknown. Of course, for me, this is a recipe for getting lost. Still, if I wanted to be able to finish twenty-six-point-two Moonwalk miles by May I had to get out there and walk whether I wanted to or not. a surprise nine mile walk – first published 21 December 2012
As Christmas 2012 approached, with bad weather and odd working days, not to mention all the Christmas palaver, I’d got almost two weeks behind with my Moonwalk training schedule. The short walks were easy enough to fit in, the long walks not so much. Still, the whole reason for starting the training so early was so I could have the odd missed long walk when the weather was dreadful, I was ill or life was too busy. Forward planning at its best. Even so, with one missed nine mile walk behind me, it was annoying to wake up on my next walking day to torrential rain. There was also the small problem of picking up the Christmas meat. Ice and the price of progress – first published 2 December 2012
My first Moonwalk training walk of December 2012 took me on what was to become, more or less, one of my current walks to work. At the time, it was a walk I hadn’t done in years and some things weren’t how I remembered them at all. Sometimes it seems progress isn’t always for the better… Continue reading Ice and the price of progress – first published 2 December 2012
Mini Moonwalk training to Millers Pond – first published 30 November 2012

For my last Moonwalk training walk of November 2012 the training plan threw in a nice short walk to give me a break from the long walks. Either that or it was lulling me into a false sense of security. As the weather was decidedly cold and icy I can’t say I was disappointed. After a bit of map looking I decided to revist an old haunt from my childhood. In the thirty years or so since I’d last been to Millers Pond things had changed a little.

Trying to find a long way to work – first published 27 November 2012
Trying to fit in the short Moonwalk training walks was getting more difficult. Especially when, towards of November 2012, they became longer. All this meant trying to find a longer rote to walk to work. In theory this should have been easy enough to accomplish. In practice it turned out to be quite a faff. Hopefully no one was watching… Continue reading Trying to find a long way to work – first published 27 November 2012
Moonwalk training plans – first published 12 November 2012
After impulsively signing up for the 2013 Moonwalk and optimisticly putting myself down for a six hour finish it was obvious I was going to have to follow a proper training plan this time. With such an odd job, working random days, following my chosen plan wasn’t quite as simple as I’d first thought though. Throw rest days, cross training and slow walking into the mix and it all started to seem tougher than I’d expected. Then there was a trip to London to fit into my busy schedule.

Moonwalk Deja Vu – first published 9 November 2012
After my first Moonwalk was over I told anyone who would listen, “never again.” The training took all my spare time. I had horrible blisters, all sorts of aches and pains and some of those long walks in bad weather were the stuff of nightmares. Waking twenty six point two miles around London all through the night was gruelling to say the least, especially for someone who likes to be in bed by eleven. There was a terrific buzz crossing the finish line but it didn’t quite feel worth all that pain. When I said it I really meant it… Continue reading Moonwalk Deja Vu – first published 9 November 2012
walking and the eternal problem of finding a loo – first published 7 September 2012

Toilets, or the lack of them have always been a bit of an issue on some of my longer walks. Back in September 2012 a slight toilet emergency had me thinking about some of the lavatory related close shaves I’ve had in my walking career. Let’s start at the very beginning – first published 8 July 2012
The old Fatgirslimblog is gone forever but I have been able to salvage some of it. The backups I made a couple of weeks age have saved all the text and, with the help of my techy friend at LCN, I have managed to rescue many of the photos. Of course that’s just half the story because putting the two together again is going to be a long, slow, labour intensive process. Some things will be lost forever. Anyone who has followed me for any length of time may experience a few flashes of deja vu as I pop in the odd old post. Now it’s a matter of deciding what to save and what to discard. So, let’s start at the very beginning with my very first post. Continue reading Let’s start at the very beginning – first published 8 July 2012
