Sunshine, showers and a cloud of moths in my head – first published 10 August 2014

Moth Swarm by Carlos Amorales

My Dad said he never dreamed. Maybe I have his share because I almost always do. When I wake some of them stay with me and others fade, leaving just a jumbled essence that I can’t quite grasp in the light of day. There is no doubt in my mind they mean something, though not in the dream interpretation book kind of way. To me the answers come from within and the symbols are personal. It isn’t always easy to work out what they are trying to tell me.

A few nights ago my dreams were jumbled but one fragment stayed with me. A stream of charcoal coloured moths poured out of my right temple and, as they fluttered away in a dark cloud, a feeling of lightness and joy came over me. Obviously it’s about letting something go, something dark in my head that’s weighing me down and making me unhappy. Perhaps it’s grief, although, right now, I can’t let that go.

It’s been a strange week. Sunshine and showers both physical and metaphorical. I’ve moved through it all as if in a dream. From walking through Commando Senior’s empty house to an ice cream parlour. From funeral and wake to buses in Bristol. Overlaying everything is a haze of sadness, a feeling of unreality.

There was water like beaten lead when I made my way to work on Friday and a brooding sky that could have come from an old master, probably with an angel or two. There were no angels but plenty of swans. Saturday’s walk to work brought rain spattered hydrangeas. The days in between the walks were filled with the usual lost property and pointless complaints from people with way too much time on their hands.

Commando’s birthday on Saturday went almost unnoticed with me at work all day and him preparing for a twenty mile marathon training run the next day. This morning the tail end of hurricane Bertha brought rain and wind. Commando set off, rather reluctantly, for his run once it seemed to have slowed down a bit. While he was out I dashed to town to pick up my new glasses. The wind and rain abated mostly, at least when I wasn’t in the shop. Commando wasn’t quite so lucky and got wet and wind buffeted in a manner I remember all too well from my own hellish twenty mile Moonwalk training.

To say he looked like a drowned and rather tired rat when he staggered through the door would be an understatement. Still, at least he got back before things really started to go bad. While he was in the shower the rain came down so hard and fast we could hardly believe our eyes. The wind blew sheets of water across the roofs of the houses behind us in an alarming manner, huge hailstones smashed against our windows and thunder shook the house. CJ and I stood at the window open mouthed. I even shot a video. Then it stopped as suddenly as it started. When Commando emerged from the shower he said, “has it been raining?”

This afternoon we began what is going to be a long process of clearing Commando Senior’s house. He was a man who liked to buy in bulk. There is a loo roll mountain. We will probably never have to buy air freshener or soap powder for the rest of our lives. In fact it’s quite possible our boys will end up clearing some of this stuff out of our house when we die. It isn’t going to be easy.
