The first Sunday of June 2014 and another early start in my capacity as blister technician and chief bag carrier. Commando was running the Gosport Golden Mile and 5k again. It’s a bit of an odd race, a mile sprint followed immediately by a second 5k race run on the same course along the shore at Stokes Bay. It’s a bit of an odd place too, as I was to find out. There was a new running race in town in June 2013. Ok, it wasn’t in our town, it was down the road a few miles in Gosport, but Commando was raring to have a go. In actual fact it was two races in one, a mile sprint along the shore at Stokes Bay followed by a 5k run. Of course, Commando had put his name down for both and, obviously, I was going along to watch and have a walk. Best of all it was a bright, sunny, Sunday morning. Of course, once he’d stopped running poor Commando was freezing. There was a little time before the 5k race was due to start but our first job was to remove the Golden Mile race number and pin on the 5k one. Stupidly, we decided to do this on the beach in the pouring rain with the wind tearing at us. When I took the first safety pin out my fingers were so wet and cold I dropped it and had to scrabble around amongst the pebbles in what I was sure would be a futile search. When Commando reminded me that Sunday was the day of the Gosport Golden mile and 5k, I was quite looking forward to it. Since the first one, in 2013, Commando has run it every year and, althought it may be short, there’s time enough for me to have a nice stroll along the pretty shore at Stokes Bay while he’s running and still be there at the finish line. It does mean an early start for a Sunday morning but it’s well worth it and, with a children’s mile race before the main event and, this year, a wheelchair race too, it had the makings of a fun morning. After my trip to london there was no time for a lazy, restful morning because Commando had a race to run. It wasn’t just any race either, it was the Gosport Half Marathon, the longest race he’d ever run. He’d been training hard and I had no doubt he’d finish but, even so, there wasa little kernel of worry in the back of my mind. What if something went wrong? What if he did t make it in the time he wanted?
