False dawn?

As August 2020 crept towards September there were worrying signs that the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel might have been a false dawn, or maybe an approaching train. Suddenly, all the positivity of June and July, the news of retail sales recovering to almost pre COVID levels and things slowly reopening was slipping away. Things were going awry again. There were surges of cases in Manchester, East Lancashire and Yorkshire. Local lockdowns didn’t seem to be working. Plans to reopen more things were put on hold.

Probably the biggest barn in Britain

A while ago Commando came back from a Sunday bike ride with the fast boys raving about a giant barn he’d seen. John, fast boy, founder of the Itchen Spitfires Running Club, Parkrun ED, history buff and keeper of interesting facts told him it was the biggest barn in Britain. Commando said he’d take me to see it one day. Today was that day, although I had no idea where he was taking me at the time.

Sometimes, I set off on a walk with a clear objective in mind, other times I just wander and see where the trails take me. One Sunday in early April 2013, I started out on the former and ended up on the latter. It may not have ended where I’d wanted, and more than two years on, I’ve still not managed to get there, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t interesting.
