At the end of June Commando injured his ankle. Our GP, when I finally managed to persuade him to go, told him he was too old to be running and should give up at once because he probably had osteoarthritis. Obviously, we ignored this diagnosis. Three weeks later, with things not really improving, Commando visited a sports physio for a second opinion. The diagnosis this time was a possible stress fracture. A short walk and a long lens

When Commando bought me the fancy pants camera it had two lenses with it, 18-55mm and 55-200mm. Camera buffs will understand exactly what this means but, frankly, it meant nothing to me other than the longer lens was for taking pictures of things further away. Learning to use the camera at all was a steep enough learning curve without adding extra lenses into the equation so I left the 55-200mm lens in the box and concentrated on getting used to the 18-55mm lens and the workings of the camera in general. I’ve known Commando since we were both in our late teens. We met in the White Swan pub in Mansbridge, a place I was frequenting in an effort to forget a disastrous past, hiding out from people who hurt me badly. Back then the pub car park was always filled with motorcycles, that was what drew me there. My Dad had motorbikes, my cousin too, I grew up with a strange, slightly dangerous attraction to them and the men who rode them.
